Full course description

Introduction

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a silent pandemic which is a growing public health issue requiring urgent attention around the globe. It is estimated that about 750 000 people die as a result of drug-resistant infections and by 2050, it is projected that the number would reach 10 million and cost more than 100 trillion USD.  AMR causes constraints on the health system. A number of studies have shown the financial consequences of AMR, including extremely high costs due to increase hospital admissions, longer stays, more intensive care units and isolation beds, expensive and intensive therapy.  Apart from the political will needed to urgently address this pandemic, health professionals would have a major role to play towards addressing this pandemic. The World Health Organisation (WHO) Global Action Plan on Antimicrobial Resistance (GAP-AMR) calls for raising awareness and educating and training health workers to improve antimicrobial prescribing and dispensing behaviors.

The aim of this course are to:

  • Improve awareness and understanding of current burden of AMR.
  • Improve knowledge on AMR through surveillance and research.
  • Improve the ability of participants to optimize the use of antimicrobial agents.

Learning Outcome

At the end of this intensive course, participants should:

  • Gain enhanced concepts that lead to greater depth of knowledge and awareness of AMR.
  • Achieve a degree of competency to be able to carry out antimicrobial prescribing  independently.
  • Demonstrate appropriate attitudes to ensure responsible stewardship of antimicrobials.
