1. INTRODUCTION

This course aims to cater for the crucial need of the society and would go a long way in fulfilling the mental health requirements of the people keeping in mind the shortage of mental health personnel. This course is designed to assist learners in developing further expertise and in-depth understanding in the field of adult mental health. It will help learners to appreciate the client as a holistic individual and develop skills to function as educator, manager and researcher in the field of mental health.

 2. LEARNING OBJECTIVES

At the end of the course the learners will be able to:

1. Review the concept of mental health and illness in adult.

2. Explore the trends and issues in the field of mental health and illness in adult.

3. Understand psychobiology in mental disorders and it’s implication.  

4. Appraise the different theories related to mental health.

5. Identify and critique mental health in specific populations- adolescent, women and old age.

6. Demonstrate understanding of ECT therapy.

 

 3. TARGET GROUP

Graduates from Nursing & Midwifery/ Medicine/other healthcare professions including Psychology & Social work (Post registration as applicable).

UNIT- 1: OVERVIEW OF FUNDAMENTALS OF MENTAL HEALTH & ILLNESS

i.  Concept of mental health and mental illness in adult  

ii.  Historical perspectives of mental health

iii. Trends, issues and magnitude

iv.  Contemporary practices

v.  Review of mental health laws/Act & human rights of mentally ill

vi. Review of national mental health program

UNIT -2: REVIEW OF THEORIES RELATED TO MENTAL HEALTH

UNIT -3:  REVIEW OF MENTAL HEALTH DISORDERS

i.  Epidemiology and Prevalence of Mental Health Disorders

ii. Classification and clinical features of Mental Health Disorders

iii. Identification and Assessment of Mental Health Disorders

UNIT -4: REVIEW OF EVIDENCE BASED PRACTICES IN MENTAL HEALTH IN SPECIFIC AREAS AND POPULATIONS

i. Developmental Disorders:

·       Mental retardation

·       Specific learning disabilities

·       Rehabilitation of the mentally ill

ii.  Mental Health in Specific Populations:

·       Women’s Mental health

·       Adolescent Mental Health

·       Mental Health in Old Age

iii.  Specific Issues on Mental Health:

·       Deliberate self-harm and suicide

·       Mental Health related to sexuality and Gender

·       Occupational Mental Health

UNIT - 5: OVERVIEW OF ELECTRO CONVULSIVE THERAPY

Overview of ECT

·       Risks Associated with ECT

UNIT - 6: COMMUNICATION IN MENTAL HEALTH

·       Review of effective communication skills

 

6. COURSE DISTRIBUTION IN HOURS

Total course duration - 3 months = 12 weeks

Theory - 3 hours per week for 3 days = 9 hours x 12 weeks = 108 hours

Self-Directed Learning (SDL) - 8 hours per week for 12 weeks = 96 hours

Total = 108 + 96 = 204 hours

 

7. TEACHING LEARNING METHODS

Interactive lectures conducted online (virtual learning environment) and on-site, problem-solving and case-based approaches to learning. Course materials include lecture notes, PowerPoint presentation slides and other relevant materials applicable to the course/ module.

9. AWARD

Upon successful completion of the course, learners will be awarded with a Continuing Professional Development (CPD) certificate, provided they have passed formative assessment and summative assessments each at 50% with 90% attendance in all the course activities.
