1. COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This curriculum is designed for training health professionals in stroke management and care. This programme encompasses an overall hands-on training in management of acute and chronic stroke, its complications as well as an exposure to surgical and interventional management for prevention and treatment of stroke. This course has three modules with 20 credits to be completed in the time limit of 3 months. 

 

2. LEARNING OUTCOMES:

By end of the course the learners will be able to:

  • Categorize high-risk factors of Ischaemic Stroke and Transient Ischaemic Attack (TIA) and acute strokes who require emergency treatment. 
  • Apply the knowledge on primary and secondary prevention, diagnostic procedure, general stroke treatment, specific treatment including acute management, management of complications.
  • Evaluate rehabilitation of acute and chronic stroke patients. 

3. TARGET GROUP

  • Graduates from Nursing & Midwifery/ Medicine/ other healthcare professions - post registration.

 

4. COURSE OUTLINE:

UNIT -1: REVIEW OF EPIDEMIOLOGY, PATHOPHYSIOLOGY, & DIAGNOSIS 

 

1.1. Introduction

1.2. Magnitude of Stroke burden in the world

1.3. Definition of stroke & TIAs

1.4 Early detection of stroke

1.5. Modifiable risk factors

1.6. Non- modifiable risk factors

1.7. Diagnostic procedures of stroke

UNIT -2: REVIEW OF EVIDENCE BASED PRACTICE IN PREVENTION AND MANAGEMENT OF STROKE & TIAs

2.1. Primary Prevention of stroke & TIAs

2.2. Management of stroke & TIAs

2.3. Secondary prevention of stroke & TIAs 

UNIT -3: REVIEW OF EVIDENCE BASED PRACTICE IN REHABILITATIONS FOR STROKE & TIAs

 

3.1. Physiotherapeutic management of stroke patients

 

5. TEACHING LEARNING METHODS: 

Interactive Lectures conducted online, Problem-solving exercise and case-based learning through a VLE platform. Course materials, including lecture notes and Power Point presentation, and other programme materials will be provided electronically.

 

 6. DISTRIBUTION OF COURSE IN HOURS:

 

Total course duration - 3 months = 12 weeks

Theory - 3 hours per week for 3 days = 9 hours x 12 weeks = 108 hours

Self-Directed Learning (SDL) - 8 hours per week for 12 weeks = 96 hours

Total = 108 + 96 = 204 hours

8. AWARD:

 

Upon successful completion of the course, learners will be awarded with a Continuing Professional Development (CPD) certificate, provided they have passed formative assessment and summative assessments each at 50% with 90% attendance in all the course activities.
