1. INTRODUCTION
This course is designed to assist the learners to provide appropriate resources and support to gain knowledge on successful approaches to achieve a healthy weight before conception, maintain a healthy rate of weight gain during pregnancy and attain a healthy Body Mass Index (BMI) postpartum. Also, this course will teach them treatment modalities for obesity include lifestyle changes, medical management and even surgery, all of which have the potential to impact future pregnancies and reproductive health in general. This course has six modules with 20 credits to be completed in the time limit of 3 months.
2. LEARNING OBJECTIVES
By the end of this session, learners will be able to:
i. Review the classification, pathophysiology & epidemiological aspects of obesity in
pregnancy.
ii. Prevent the consequences of pre-gestational obesity.
iii. Manage the maternal and fetal effects of obesity in pregnancy.
iv. Identify the indications for using bariatric surgery to manage obesity in a patient
who desires future fertility.
v. Reflect on how implicit bias impacts the delivery of care to pregnant obese
women.
vi. Analyse the weight loss strategies in pre-pregnancy and post-partum periods.
3. TARGET GROUP
Graduates from Nursing & Midwifery/Medicine/other healthcare professions - post registration.
4. COURSE CONTENT:
UNIT -1: Review of Introduction and Pathophysiology and consequences of gestational obesity i. Definition ii. Epidemiology iii. Classification of obesity iv. Pathophysiology v. Consequences of gestational obesity |
UNIT -2: Review of Complications of gestational obesity using evidence based practice i. Maternal Complications ii. Fetal Complications |
UNIT -3: Review of management using evidence-based practice
i. Pre-pregnancy management ii. Pregnancy Management iii. Labor and delivery Management
iv. Postpartum Management |
5. DISTRIBUTION OF COURSE IN HOURS:
Total course duration - 3 months = 12 weeks
Theory - 3 hours per week for 3 days = 9 hours x 12 weeks = 108 hours
Self-Directed Learning (SDL) - 8 hours per week for 12 weeks = 96 hours
Total = 108 + 96 = 204 hours
6. TEACHING LEARNING METHODS:
Interactive Lectures conducted online, Problem-solving exercise and case-based learning through a VLE platform. Course materials, including lecture notes and power point presentation and other programme materials will be provided electronically.

8. AWARD:
Upon successful completion of the course, learners will be awarded with a Continuing Professional Development (CPD) certificate, provided they have passed formative assessment and summative assessments each at 50% with 90% attendance in all the course activities.
